I chose this flower to represent a pure and simple wish for beauty and peace in our lives, a universal sentiment for so many occasions- birth, marriage, anniversaries, in sympathy and in remembrance. I was thinking about making art that reflects the natural beauty all around us, that causes us to change our mood or lift our spirits. For me, beauty found in nature has this transformative power. This figure presents the many small miracles happening all around us. Her open arms are a historical and universal gesture of blessing, both welcoming and inclusive. Her carvings, dotted with gold, of plants, flowers, birds, butterflies, the cycle of seasons, are the everyday earthly blessings that enrich our lives immeasurably. I wanted this pose to evoke a feeling of being completely in the present with your child, the weight, the scent, the feel. Sharing with each other the silent vow that you will be there for always. The months of infancy are like none other, maybe because you feel the baby is still part of you, baby and mother still as one, nothing can come between. The essential promise that a mother makes to her child, to love and protect forevermore, is unconditional. -Susan Lordi

I was sculpting this piece at the time of the Winter Olympics. I was inspired by the strength and perseverance of young female competitors in figure skating, snowboarding, skiing, their confidence exudes with every gesture and movement, literally shining with happiness and pride. We all have the capacity to shine from within, so I wanted this figure to be a reminder of our own inner strength. Shine could be a congratulatory piece for a milestone reached, or a healing piece to show support and belief in someone. I wanted the form to be visually uplifting, a little reminder of personal goals, met. I embellished the surface with gold to suggest inner light and energy. -Susan Lordi

The gesture of the figure and the bird communicates forward movement, being uplifted, moving onward; a release of hopes, dreams and spirit; of new beginnings and of endings; in celebration of a life, or in anticipation of a life together. This piece could be a way to express best wishes to someone who is taking a new path in life; on a road to recovery from illness or toward self-improvement. A hopeful symbol of peace for military families awaiting the return of their solders. An expression of sympathy to someone who has lost a loved one. The sentiment refers to the song Turn, Turn, Turn, written by Pete Seeger in 1959, adapted from the Book of Ecclesiastes. In the song, there’s a contrast in each example, ‘A time to be born/die, plant/reap, laugh/weep’ and so on. I like the lyrical, repetitive nature of the phrasing. At significant milestones, we often pause and reflect before moving forward, so ‘a time to reflect, a time to soar’ seemed like a nice expression for this piece.  -Susan Lordi
