When my son was young, I remember how he craved physical playtime with his Dad, wrestling on the floor, big bear hugs, being silly, running, climbing, jumping; it didn't matter, just that they were together, laughing, spending time in the moment. Years later, I realized all of that physical interaction was a powerful way for dad and son to communicate, and how it formed a strong base of trust and love for a lifetime. -Susan Lordi

I wanted to make a figure with her face in the flowers, taking them in with her senses, smelling them, feeling the petals against her face; feeling safe in that surround. So this piece could say to someone that they are loved by those around them, if a person is experiencing difficulty, it could be a reminder of family and friends who support and are there for them. Or it could be a way to say to one special person that all your love is surrounding them (more of a romantic interpretation), or just a little gift for someone who loves to garden. I like that people read this piece differently. The choice of red poppies was influenced by trips to France, seeing fields of poppies. The red poppy symbolizes remembrance, so this piece could be a tribute to those who served our country.  -Susan Lordi

The gesture of something special is one of protection and caring for something precious; our children, our earth, our natural resources. I see it as a hopeful piece about possibilities, about every child, doing his or her share. The rock is etched with words and images. The puzzle pieces allude to how we are all inextricably linked together, they’re also symbols of children with autism. 'Special' can mean many things, the special responsibility to care for our planet, and to nurture ALL our children to care for their future. 'Something' can be interpreted on many levels. The little sprout is an unknown. What’s it going to become? And the boy is a sprout too, what’s he going to become? He could represent hope for the future. This piece could be a symbol of newness and beginnings. Also, for many years we’ve wanted to experiment with environmentally friendly packaging that wouldn’t increase breakage. We’re excited to try it with the packaging of something special. The inner shell is made from biodegradable paper pulp, so now both shell and box can be easily recycled.  -Susan Lordi
