I wanted this pose to evoke a feeling of being completely in the present with your child, the weight, the scent, the feel. Sharing with each other the silent vow that you will be there for always. The months of infancy are like none other, maybe because you feel the baby is still part of you, baby and mother still as one, nothing can come between. The essential promise that a mother makes to her child, to love and protect forevermore, is unconditional. -Susan Lordi

I was thinking about making art that reflects the natural beauty all around us, that causes us to change our mood or lift our spirits. For me, beauty found in nature has this transformative power. Her carvings, dotted with gold, of plants, flowers, birds, butterflies, the cycle of seasons, are the everyday earthly blessings that enrich our lives immeasurably. I think that a rose is one of the most beautiful natural objects that we can, carefully, hold in our hands. We enjoy the intoxicating scent, the silk-velvet touch, the perfect form. They unfold and give forth their fragrance; they’re intimate and draw you in. So this piece could be a gift to a mother or friend or Valentine, or someone you’re wishing well. Sometimes it’s nice to give a gift to let someone know that they are a gift in your life. I wanted the bouquet to be overflowing, more than enough, to express abundant feelings for someone, or the abundant goodness a person shares with others.  -Susan Lordi
